JAKE Wright believes it is up to Oxford United’s players to generate a lively atmosphere tomorrow.

The mood in the Kassam Stadium was unusually flat on Tuesday, even before kick-off, and there were boos from some fans at the final whistle in response to a 3-2 defeat against Dagenham & Redbridge.

It was United’s third home league defeat this season and Wright thinks the players need to take the initiative against Torquay United.

He said: “We have to create our own atmosphere and, if we start really well, we lift the fans.

“That’s our fault in a way that we started poorly, which made the crowd quite subdued from the word go.

“Once they scored it was difficult for the fans to lift themselves, as it is for us.”

The U’s skipper is determined to help turn things round after an inconsistent season so far.

He said: “If we win on Saturday it makes things easier, but then you’ll be frustrated that if only we had won on Tuesday we’d be three points further up the table.

“First and foremost we need to be positive against Torquay, get the fans going and hopefully win the game.”
