GORDON Ross refused to take much credit for London Welsh’s vital victory over London Irish, writes ED MEZZETTI.

The Scottish fly half had a 100 per cent success rate from the kicking tee in the 15-9 win, but he was not getting carried away.

“The goal-kicking was good, but I think that was the only positive in a pretty scrappy performance both personally, and from the team,” said Ross “When they went down to 14, we maybe expected things to happen and didn’t work as hard as we have done previously.

“But we won’t be too bothered (by that). We have got the victory on the board and that is the most important thing.”

Welsh failed to score a try and have played better, but Ross knows they must play within their means.

“We are not daft,” said Ross. “We know we are not going to win games by 20 or 30 points like Harlequins, Leicester and Saracens.

“We have got to dog it out every week and scrap for any point, never mind the victory.

“There was probably a better satisfaction in the changing room at Northampton last week when we lost because we played better.

“We wanted to improve this week in certain areas of the game. “We did in one or two, but a lot of them, we lost our shape a little bit and couldn’t build too much momentum going forward.”

Ross added: “We have got a couple of things we are good at and we will stick at them, but we have got to try and improve our all-round game.

“That’s two home games in a row where we have not conceded tries, so that is good.

“We can’t fault the effort they are putting in in the front row.

“Our scrum has been great and our lineout drive got us a couple of penalties, which resulted in points.”
