Oxford United 0 Sheffield United 3 (McMahon 17, Kitson 68, Blackman 87)

OXFORD United's FA Cup run came to an end in the third round as they were beaten by Sheffield United at the Kassam Stadium.

Although it was the same scoreline as the meeting in last season's competition, it was a far more even encounter.

The U's had chances and will reflect in particular on a bad miss from Justin Richards with the score at only 1-0 early in the second half.

The Blades had to work hard for their win, but their greater cutting edge won the game.

Tony McMahon's free-kick gave them a lead at the break and after Richards's miss Dave Kitson doubled the lead.

Even at 2-0 the underdogs threatened, but Nick Blackman's late strike settled the tie for good.

Richards came straight into the side to begin his second loan spell, replacing the suspended James Constable.

There were two other changes in the XI, with Simon Heslop in for Lee Cox and the more defensive-minded Tony Capaldi preferred to Sean Rigg on the left flank.

The Blades showed how seriously they took the game by naming a very strong side, with Jamie Murphy handed a debut after joining from Motherwell on Thursday.

There were 35 places between the sides in the league pyramid, but it was the lower ranked team who made the better start.

The U's had three glimpses of George Long's goal in the opening 15 minutes as they attempted to make a fast start.

Peter Leven, Heslop and Tom Craddock all tried their luck from range, but the trio's efforts were all off target.

Sheffield United were forced into an early change when Matthew Hill came off second best in a challenge with Jake Wright.

The visitors from npower League One had barely threatened, but they took the lead with the first meaningful attack, on 17 minutes.

A direct run from Murphy was halted by Wright on the edge of the box and although the U's skipper felt it was a clean tackle, referee Carl Boyeson awarded a free-kick.

The hosts brought all ten outfield players back to defend, but they were helpless as McMahon flicked a shot over the wall which caught out a flat-footed Ryan Clarke and ended up in the net.

Chris Wilder's side responded well and their best chance before the break came midway through the half.

A quick throw from Capaldi saw Craddock sprint past a flagging Harry Maguire. The striker got his shot away and Long turned it round the post for a corner.

The U's showed enough going forward to worry Sheffield United's back four.

Alfie Potter's pace in particular appeared to cause them problems when he was given space to dribble.

It did not lead to anything, but the spell before half time ensured the underdogs went in at the break still well in the tie.

They needed one superb block from Michael Duberry to keep out a shot from Michael Doyle. On the rebound Clarke saved well at point blank range.

It kept the U's in the game and nine minutes after the restart they should have drawn level.

Craddock superbly cushioned Capaldi's long ball into Richards's path, sending him clear inside the box. But the ball appeared to get caught under the striker's feet and after an age he could only shoot wide.

It looked a costly miss at the time, and so it proved.

Midway through the half Blackman rose at the back post to nod a free-kick back across the face of goal, where Kitson bundled in from close range.

Blackman came within a whisker of adding a quick third, but his curling shot was deflected just past the post.

Rigg, who had been brought on just before the second goal, gave United an added cutting edge as they looked for a lifeline.

The winger fired one chance wide and saw another effort smartly saved as the home side enjoyed their best spell of the match.

The clearest chance fell to Craddock, who got away with a shove on Marcus Williams to collect Leven's through ball. The striker steadied himself, but drove a low shot inches wide.

With three minutes remaining the Blades finally made the game safe, when Blackman buried a finish past Clarke.

Oxford Utd (4-4-2): Clarke, Batt, Duberry, Wright, O'Brien (Rigg 67), Potter, Heslop, Leven, Capaldi, Richards, Craddock.

Unused subs: Brown, Worley, Raynes, O'Dowda, Parker, Marsh.

Sheffield Utd (4-4-2): Long, McMahon, Maguire, Higginbotham, Hill (Williams 12), Blackman, McDonald, Doyle, Flynn, Murphy (Cresswell 89), Kitson (Ironside 76).

Unused subs: Tonne, Whitehouse, Kennedy, Coyne.

Referee: Carl Boyeson.

Decent performance compared to the game against them last year, not really a 3 - 0 game, Officials seemed somewhat blinkered out there today, shame we didn't take any of the good opportunity's that we had, it could have turned out a very different result.
We move on, and should hold our heads high!

How coincidental, Ref is from Yorkshire and the last OUFC game he officiated was versus Shef Utd FA Cup 1st Rnd last season.

A guy from Hull might dislike Sheff U. Perhaps he could not care less about them. Banbury's Dermot G reffed impeccably Moanurenited's FA Cup Final victory over Liverpool - that bore in which Cantona got a superb winner . No complaints about a Banbury ref doing it - even though he was a fanatic of Saint Alec's men

A much better performance today against a quick side who seemed to fall over a lot and need sponge bob on the field to patch them up.

Officials were disappointing and the south stand Lino could not make up his mind up at all, some of the decisions were baffling to say the least.

But I have confidence if we play like that for the rest of the season we will do ok, as others have said Hessie seems a little out of sorts since his mate Asa went.

Needing to have a glittering football career - that rules out most of our best football journalists - step aside Henry Winter etc Yep I was a good amateur footer player - not as good as Heslop, the pro. So, can only those with glittering careers comment on football? Idiot ? At least this idiot knows that there is no apostrophe in the plural of the word 'career' - Magiltonmagic. I did not say that the loss was 'down' to Heslop - but his lack of creative talent contributed to our lack of goals - didn't it?.

Unfortunately the scoreline does not give a true reflection of the game. Yellows played well but it was the case of missed chances and poor officials.
Would have liked to have seen Wilder give Marsh a bit of time in the latter part of the game. If only Richards had buried that chance early in the second half it could have been game on and a different result but at least we tried and did not give up .Well done lads no shame on this one thats for sure.

We are gradually accepting less and less in terms quality and results. So it may have been an ok performance but when was the last time we did anything exceptional? When was the last time anyone left the ground thinking "wow that will stick with me for many years" ? It used to happen on quite a regular basis but the passion, aspiration and belief seems to have drained from this club. I don't blame Wilder alone but he is too dour and thus creates a mindset in the players of accepting mediochrity. Luton did for Wolves today and Macclesfield beat Cardiff based on belief and passion, feats that not so long ago we would achieve. Where has it all gone wrong?

Glad we're out of the cup - next league game important we have to keep up this winning run and move into play offs. Really don't get the praise for Heslop I think he's Conference at best. Promotion is the aim nothing else in my view. Sheff Utd are that good they lost at home to struggling Hartlepool a couple of weeks ago so let's get some perspective here chaps.

Wilder's last chance this season.

Oldun what did Potter do? you could go on and on but as I said Sheffield took the chances that came to them and we did'nt and that was the difference, as far as I know we had 11 players on the pitch yet your implication is that it was still down to Heslop which is idiotic. The scoreline flattered them and hopefully won't dent confidence too much as we are on a good run which again will hopefully take us into the playoffs or better.

I did not imply that it was "down to Heslop" - did I? . Potter was not at his best - just an opinion. Heslop is at best Conference standard - just an opinion

played fairly well but got done on two set pieces, clarke was nowhere for the freekick. bit baffling why rigg did not start as he and alfie have been on good form at late especially as we were already without jc. probably hoping to contain shef with a more defensive lineup but surely in a one off cuptie at home a more attacking stance would have been better.

Agreed. I thought that Rigg should have played - in a 442 - with Heslop at most on the bench. Hope CWs decision does not signal a return to his long term fave 433

Probably a blessing that you were knocked out of the cup as you can now concentrate staying in the football league now. With a gap off at least two Divisions come May its must be worrying times for the Pox with even the Rugby club getting bigger crowds in that three sided weird ground, may be when the London Welsh buy the ground they may get the extra stand built and ship you lot off to Didcot to ground share in the conference. Pop down the A420 and come and see a real football team banging in goals for fun and conceding none. Last four games scored 16 conceded 0 and twelve points not bad eh.

Normally I don't respond to our country cousins. Get yer facts right about LW RUFC - average crowd is lower than United's. Yep you are doing really well but we will end in the top half of Div 4 - and you aren't going up. No more responses from me to you - just get LWRUFC gates into perspective - attendances are always particular high over Christmas holidays - as they used to be in football. Also they have just 11 home league games each season

May be you are right on the average gates but 5,835 Pox fans against a top Division one team in the FA cup who bought down 1,244 of their own fans is quite pathetic. We were getting over 9000 yesterday against a poor Division one side Carlisle the gulf is widening.

Yes bigmanmo , I feel the same way as you about the club . Football is also the entertainment industry and I drive up from Dorset to watch us and the last two games I've watched Aldershot and Cheltenham have lacked quality . I also have a few issues with some of our players regarding their effort and desire as sportsmen . Listened to the game on radio oxford yesterday and Rosie said quote we can compete with them but are not good enough to beat them ! This current squad of players would struggle if we manage to sneak into the play offs . Got tickets to watch Bournemouth v Swindon next week , both clubs have in my view good managers / coaches and ambitious chairman . Still have supported the club since of was 12 and will continue too and believe we can one day play and hold our own in the championship . Will be cheering for Bournemouth next sat by the way !

Yeah the same little Macclesfield that dumped Cardiff out yesterday. I see that game against Town and they thoroughly deserved their win and are a much better team than conference level. After beating Brighton, Stoke and Wigan recently in cups I think we have some balance at STFC.

Oh Sorry adlibber I forgot to add that we have scored the most league goals in Division one, conceded the least number of goals so have the best goal advantage in the Division, have four players contributing 38 goals between them which is really pleasing in my little world with James Collins on a decent 13 goals so far. I was commenting on JC the other day as an outsider. Some decided it was their paper and didn't like others opinions , bit narrow minded was my thought on these individuals.

We were getting over 9000 yesterday against a poor Division one side Carlisle the gulf is widening.
if the gulf is so vast why is it you can't beat us? Stick to your own small world until strangers visit your town to break theone eyed webbed foot chain
Can always tell when they are rattled and lost for sensible words - the dredge up the usual lack of intellect comments. Ho Hum ....
we will see when you manager leave for a prem club in the closed season

L Welsh attendance today versus high flying Harlequeens was 4,653 (not televised game) . - obviously gates would be a lot higher if L Welsh were doing better and had been at Mr Kassam's ground for a few years - today, Wasps got 7k plus for the televised game at Wycombe

If that does happen R80's we'll deal with it, at the moment we'll make the most of having him in charge and what he has done for the club.

Something you won't have to consider with CW - but only my opinion CW has done for you lot the best he can with the financial constraints, anyone else would have the same problems unless they brought in some decent investors with them.

Yep it's only an opinion . My opinion -
many managers have worked wonders at many clubs on low budgets relative to much of their opposition (Ian Greaves at Oxford was one such example - so is Moyes at Everton - obviously at a much higher level ) .

Take your point Oldun and agree but to be honest those types are few and far between.
Cheltenham appear to manage on low crowds and a small budget and yet again they up there again in the playoffs.

I dont think he was trying to be funny, just pointing out that most swindon lads are scruffy tramps.
It was quite thoughtful not mentioning the 6 fingers and webbed toes. Or the fact that a lot of you call your sister, mum.
