RUGBY: Welsh coach delighted to grab bonus point
LYN Jones played down his own contribution towards London Welsh’s stirring second-half comeback against Harlequins.
Welsh’s head coach certainly got his players fired up after half-time as they recovered from 21-6 down to lose 31-26, but Jones said he had only mentioned “some technical things”.
Jones stressed: “When you are 21-6 down and staring down the barrel of a shotgun, you don’t have a plan!
“We spoke about how we were going to win the game.
“Quins were slipping off tackles in the first half, which gave us a bit of confidence that we could play some rugger and get some gain lines.
“In the second half we started well, but didn’t take the points we wanted.
“It was important to get the first score, which we did and we were able to build and keep in touch.
“We got within a winning position, but Quins showed their ability and their class.
“They came back and scored another try. They are a very good side and a very ambitious side.
“It is a shame more teams in England don’t play like that.”
Jones felt his side were well worth the losing bonus point they earned.
He said: “If we were playing Harlequins at the start of the season, I think they would have put 30 points on us and lo and behold they did!
“Today we had a bit more about us.
“We have settled as a team since that cold wet night at the Stoop back in September.
“I think we deserved the losing bonus point.
“We showed enough resolve, ability and ambition.
“It is a good game of rugby when you play the Quins.”
