RUGBY UNION: Briggs backing Welsh to come good
London Welsh hooker Neil Briggs believes they have the battling qualities needed to beat his former club Sale Sharks at the Kassam Stadium tomorrow.
Briggs has made sure his teammates know about Sale’s fight and passion.
But he stressed: “We have a had video review as we do for every game, so there is not much that I can tell them that they can’t already see.
“Sale are going to be as hard and horrible as they can and we have got to take that.”
However, Briggs added that the Exiles have plenty of grit themselves.
“When I first arrived here, I could see that there is an attitude of never say die and never give up,” he said.
“I think that has been shown through the season.
“The boys don’t give up and keep going for 85 minutes if need be.
“That is the way Lyn Jones has got it, all credit to him.”
Briggs, however, would love Sale Sharks to stay up, provided it is not at his side’s expense.
The hooker will be going all out to defeat Sale.
But he hopes the Sharks, who were Premiership champions in 2006, and Welsh avoid relegation.
“That would be the ideal situation,” he said.
“I have got massive love for Sale – I spent eight years up there.
“I always want them to do well.
“That true northern grit is starting to come around now, which is not great for London Welsh.”
Briggs added: “You have got to have a northern club in the Premiership.
“Even if Newcastle come up from the Championship, one northern club is probably not enough to show a true reflection of rugby up there.
“The way that the Sale boys are going makes them hard to stop, so it makes it a big game for us.”
