Mullins wants United to lay down a marker
Johnny Mullins says Oxford United can make their promotion rivals take note by winning at Burton Albion tomorrow.
Both teams are in Sky Bet League Two’s top three following bright starts to the campaign.
Leaders Chesterfield are the only other club in Sky Bet League Two yet to taste defeat.
Although it is only the sixth fixture of the campaign, Mullins believes it is an opportunity to strike a blow against a side who are expected to be in the mix come May.
He said: “Some people say the league table doesn’t matter at this stage of the season, but I disagree.
“It’s more important to be at the top at the end of the season, but if you are there early it shows you’re doing the right things.
“We look at Burton as a side that will be there or thereabouts, and we want to go down there and show we’re better than them, beat them it lays down a marker.”
The Brewers finished fourth last season thanks to the best home record in the division.
Their 17 wins from 23 games included a 4-0 thumping of United last September.
Mullins also tasted defeat at the Pirelli Stadium with Rotherham United and is well aware of the challenge they have in store.
“We know it will be a difficult game, but it’s one we’re fully aware of and confident we can do something,” he said.
“They have a slightly different team to last season, but you know going to Burton is going to be a difficult game.
“It’s a small, compact ground and they will make it difficult for us.”
United’s unbeaten start has come as a result of being League Two’s top scorers, but they are yet to keep a clean sheet.
And that is something Mullins is keen to end as quickly as possible.
He said: “It’s something we’ve spoken about and as a goalkeeper and back four you set your stall out that you don’t want to concede goals.
“We don’t think we’re a bad back four and are working hard to rectify what we think can help us.
“I strongly believe if we carry on doing that we’ll get one soon.
“If we can get it there we can get it anywhere.”
