FOOTBALL: Mills strike lifts Didcot off bottom
8:47pm Wednesday 30th October 2013 in Sport
John Mills scored the winner as Didcot Town moved off the foot of the Calor League Division 1 South & West table with a narrow 1-0 victory over Fleet Town at the Draycott Engineering Lo-op Mea-dow Stadium on Saturday.
His second-half goal earned the hosts only their second victory of the season.
The win saw the battling Railwaymen leapfrog Fleet up to 20th place.
Didcot started slowly with keeper Kieran Beesley making a smart save from Phillip Moore at his near post.
But they responded well with Jack Longford forcing Fleet keeper Ryan Price into a scrambling block, while new signing Kameron Abbassi headed just wide.
And there was little surprise when they went ahead.
Abbassi’s pass put Mills clear on goal and he rounded Price before stroking the ball into an empty net. Price then kept his side in it as former North Leigh striker Mills (twice), Longford, Jem-aine Ferreira and sub Matt Blenford all failed to beat him.
Fleet started to create chances of their own, with Beesley clawing Jordan Carter’s deflected drive as it spun towards the opposite corner,as Didcot held on Didcot Tn: Beesley, Elkins, Janes, S Parish, Carnell, Abbassi, Ferreira, Baines (McKirnan 61), Mills (Blenford 84), Haysham, Longford. Subs not used: J Parish, A Williams.
Didcot Town went down 3-1 at home to fellow strugglers Evesham last Tuesday.
Their cause was not helped by losing keeper Kieran Beesley early in the second half. With no substitute keeper, defender Sam Elkins took over the gloves.
Trailing to goals from Carl Brown and Nathan Lewars at the break, Luke Carnell pulled one back, but Lance Smith added a third.
