WANTAGE’S hopes of lifting the Telegraph Cup were dashed as they fell to a 33-run defeat by Marsh Gibbon in the final at Chipping Norton, writes DAVID QUINN.
Marsh Gibbon made a slow start, losing three wickets in the process.
But Stuart Leonard and Sat Vadivale steadied the innings, allowing Nathan Callow to make a vital 37 in their 183-7 total.
Despite 59 from Tim Lane, Wantage struggled and were always behind the run rate, thanks to a haul of 4-25 from the impressive Callow in his 11 overs, as they were finally all out for 150.
His superb all-round performance saw his side to victory to take home the man-of-the-match accolade.
Thomas Swann starred with an unbeaten 106 and 4-68 in Shriven-ham’s 31-run win at Garsington in Division 1.
He was well supported by Alex Bowles (64no) and Alex King (58) as Shrivenham rattled up 254-3.
Swann then led the way as the hosts were dismissed for 223.
Radley marched on at the top of Division 2 with an eight-wicket win at home to Broughton & North Newington, who were routed for 92.
Laurence Harvey took 5-12 to skittle East & West Hendred for 66, and give hosts Clifton Hampden a crushing 121-run victory.
Richard Beard had earlier made 63 of Clifton Hampden’s 187-5.
Faringdon upset the odds by overcoming Chipping Norton by 51 runs.
Ian Oglesby stroked 96 out of the hosts’ 216-7, before Chippy were bowled out for 165, Jack Tomes taking 4-35.
Bottom club Watlington are still seking their first win of the season following a 23-run defeat at home to Tetsworth.
Ashish Narenda’s 56 helped Tets-worth to 193-7.
Despite 54 from Pete Hoskings, the home team were dismissed for 170, Nikunj Patel the key man with 4-34.
Barry Martin hit a magnificent unbeaten 124 to steer title-chasing Wantage to a four-wicket win at home to Cairns Fudge in Division 3.
Martin’s knock saw Wantage home at 265-6 after Ralph Smith had made 85 as Cairns Fudge piled up 261-4.
Wootton & Boars Hill were rolled over for 92 away to nine-man Deddington in Division 4, but still won by 39 runs.
Oliver Redford destroyed Wootton with 6-32, but then Damien Wiskin’s 4-11 helped limit Deddington to 53.
Jai-Hin Patel hit an unbeaten 110 as Kennington posted a six-wicket win at Uffington in Division 5.
His knock took Kennington past the hosts’ 212-7.
Earlier chairman Norm Robins rolled back the years with 4-51.
Tom Harris, with 99, and Adrian Redford (70) allowed Dorchester to put on 304-9 and set up a crushing 163-run victory at West Witney.
Henry Garth’s 6-19 then helped dismiss the hosts for 141.
James Stacey’s 108 propelled Sunningwell to 257-7 for a 159-run win at Oxenford 2nd in Division 6.
Sam Baker, with 4-10, and Adam Duffield (3-33) curtailed the hosts’ response to 98.
In Division 9, Paul Wiggins’s unbeaten 57 led Sunningwell 2nd to a five-wicket win at Chesterton 2nd.
Earlier, Peter Whitlock (81) and Peter Talbot (52) had shone in Chesterton’s 172-6.
