FALKIRK manager John Hughes admitted he couldn't risk playing talisman Russell Latapy for 90 minutes in last night's 1-0 home defeat by Dundee United.

The Bairns didn't look like troubling Craig Levein's side until the veteran Trinidadian midfielder replaced Steven Thomson in the 48th minute.

Four minutes later the home side should have taken the lead but Patrick Cregg's penalty hit the crossbar before Lee Wilkie headed the winner.

Hughes said: "You couldn't ask a 39-year-old to play three games in a week. We have to nurse Russell and look after him -but we did start playing when he came on."

Inverness Caley saw off Gretna 3-0 while Hearts required extra time before beating First Division strugglers Dunfermline 4-1.
