RYAN Clarke has admitted it is a sad day but he leaves Oxford United with "amazing memories" after six years at the club.

The 33-year-old has made 267 appearances for the club, including the 2010 Conference play-off final victory at Wembley, but departs after agreeing to terminate his contract, which still had a year to run.

Within an hour Northampton Town confirmed he had signed a two-year contract at Sixfields, reuniting with former U's boss Chris Wilder.

Clarke was told earlier this summer his status as United's first-choice goalkeeper was no longer guaranteed and last month the club signed Sam Slocombe, who has been given the No 1 shirt.

He said: "It’s a very sad day for me, but I think I can leave with my head held high.

"I have had six seasons which on a performance level I feel I have produced for the club every season.

"I like to think I leave without letting the club down and having done my bit.

"I have some amazing memories – obviously the Wembley play-off final and the derby games against Swindon.

"It’s a sad day, but I can take away some fantastic memories.

"It’s been the biggest part of my career, but that’s in the past now."

On Monday U's boss Michael Appleton admitted he would be surprised if Clarke had not moved by the end of this week.

Appleton said: “Ryan has done great for the club but we feel the time is right for everyone to make a change.

"We would like to thank him for his efforts and wish him well for the future.”
