A FIRST league defeat since March may have dampened the mood at Oxford United’s training ground on Monday morning, but it takes a lot more than that to get Chris Allen down.

The former winger’s enthusiasm is infectious and he has plenty to smile about after becoming assistant head coach this summer.

It came after 12 years in United’s youth set-up, during which Allen played a key role in nurturing ten players who are now in the senior squad.

They have made 95 appearances since Michael Appleton took over at the start of last season, with AJ George the latest to make his debut, coming on as a substitute in the 1-0 defeat at Northampton Town.

When Josh Ruffels, who spent time in United’s youngest age groups before going to Coventry City, is included, the total is 138 appearances.

Working with the young players remains a key part of Allen’s job description.

“It’s fantastic, every day is a great day,” he said.

“We’ve got a fair few young boys who have come through the system and it’s making sure they are ready when things happen.

“They have still got a lot to learn, so they are nowhere near the finished article.

“They have had two years with me and now I’m development and first team coach that transition should be a lot smoother.

“They know what I’m all about and my demands.”

So what is it like to see a player come through and make their debut?

Allen said: “It’s a bit of fear actually, because you’re hoping they don’t mess up.

“It is pride as well, you’re pleased.

“Although AJ’s come on and had a debut you want them to get ten, 15 games and then you can say ‘he’s done alright’.

“Then they are established a little bit, like Callum (O’Dowda), who is in the side and not seen as a young player anymore.”

Of the young players, much of the recent attention has been on one player not featuring.

Striker James Roberts made 26 appearances last season, scoring five goals, but is yet to play this season.

Allen watched the 19-year-old score a hat-trick for the development side in a 10-0 win against Kidderminster Harriers on Tuesday.

He said: “He’s finding it difficult as you would do with two or three forwards coming in front of him.

“Now’s the time when you have to be really professional, be focused and do what you have been doing as a youth team player and a first year pro.

“He’s just got to get back to doing that and things will look after itself.

“He did that on Tuesday in scoring three and he’s on the right path at the moment.”
