IAN Concannon hailed Didcot Town’s efforts as their Emirates FA Cup run came to an end in the first round with a 3-0 defeat at home to Exeter City.

Facing Football League opposition for the first time, the Railwaymen were huge underdogs, but joint-manager Concannon was pleased with his side’s performance.

“I can’t ask any more of the boys,” he said.

“They gave us absolutely everything. They’ve put a shift in and there are some very tired bodies out there.

“We’re very proud of their efforts, not just today but throughout this cup run.”

Didcot kept their Sky Bet League Two rivals at bay until half-time, but conceded early in the second period.

Concannon said: “For 45 minutes we were extremely well-disciplined and everybody did their job.

“There were signs of a little bit of frustration creeping in from Exeter, because they couldn’t break us down.

“We would have loved to have kept it quiet and taken them to a replay, but unfortunately it didn’t pan out.

“But our FA Cup run has been absolutely fantastic and it was great for the players and the club. They’ve done themselves proud.”

A record crowd of 2,707 packed into Draycott Engineering Loop Meadow Stadium and chairman John Bailey hopes many will be tempted back.

He said: “I think the club has generated a fantastic spectacle today and I think the town are very pleased with what we’ve done.

“Hopefully it puts them on the map a bit and they’ll look to come down again.

“We could get used to hosting games like this. It would be enjoyable to have crowds like this every week and it would be fantastic for the club.”
