In the latest of a new weekly column written by Oxford United fans, for Oxford United fans, CHARLOTTE MAISEY looks back on an unforgettable away trip to Cumbria in April:

THE penultimate game of a memorable season was suddenly upon us and I’d never felt nerves like it.

I certainly didn’t feel ready to embark on a 270-mile journey.

We didn’t have a great record at Brunton Park, and it felt like I’d grown up saying those words about almost every ground, but this was the day my belief in the club changed for the better.

Typically, my nerves were kept on a knife-edge throughout the game until Liam Sercombe slotted home a priceless second to make it 2-0.

It killed the game and sent 2,200 of us wild.

Taking that amount of support all the way to Carlisle was remarkable and the relationship between the club and the supporters that had been growing significantly over the previous 18 months came alive on that terrace.

A win on the final day to secure promotion was never really in doubt after such a fantastic season, was it?

Admittedly the nerves were still there, but that’s just part and parcel of being an Oxford fan.

Now I hope for another season full of similar pre-match feelings!
