PAUL Fernandez prepared for international duty by breaking the course record at Town and Gown 10k.

Raced on a new route around the streets of Oxford, the 43-year-old Abingdon runner stormed to victory in 32mins 34secs.

The Radley College teacher used the race as speed work ahead of this weekend’s Anglo Celtic Plate 100k Home International Team Race in Yorkshire, where he will represent England.

Fernandez said: “I am very pleased with the time. This race is a good run.”

RADLEY'S athletes starred in the Oxfordshire County Championships at Horspath.

In the under 20 men’s event, Matthew Johnson (100m), Blake Strickland-Bennett (triple jump) and Harry New (400m hurdles) triumphed

Sam Nelson claimed gold in the under 17 400m, while Harry Woodcock won the hammer and javelin.

Adam Chesterman clinched the shot and and discus titles in the under 15 event, with Tom Anstice successful in the senior men’s javelin.

Luisa Chantler Edmond starred in the under 20 women’s competition, winning the shot, discus and javelin.

Leah Brown clinched the under 17 girls’ 100m, while Anabel Pozniak beat clubmate Rachel Burton in the 800m.

Ella Lovibond enjoyed a successful weekend in the throwing events, winning the shot and hammer.

It proved a prosperous age group for Radley as Kylah Rowlands (high jump), Victoria Harte (javelin and pole vault), and Holly Griffiths-Brown (triple jump) also triumphed.

Alisha Williams took the under 15 javelin honour, while veteran 40 Kirsty Tanner won the senior triple jump, with Aislinn Baird claiming the hammer.

Abingdon’s athletes also tasted victory, with Pete Stepney (senior pole vault), Alexander Pennington (under 17 400m hurdles), Edward Betts (under 13 high jump) and Sarah Lackman (senior 1,500m) victorious.

Richard Jegou, of White Horse Harriers, won the senior men’s hammer.
