WALLINGFORD hosted international opposition when American side University of Scranton visited the Hithercroft.

Due to the hot conditions, the match was split into four quarters of 17 minutes.

The hosts fielded an invitational XI which included players from across three of their teams.

However, they were edged out 1-0 by the students from Pennsylvania, with Elizabeth Tolley scoring.

Wallingford thought they had equalised, but Heather Merryweather’s strike from a short corner was above the backboard.

Preceding the match was an inaugural Back To Hockey fixture between Wallingford and a combined Abingdon and Kidlington side.

The event, partly funded by England Hockey, was designed to give players, who have been training regularly over the last year after returning to the sport, a taste of competitive action.

Two goals from Jenny Capon saw Wallingford earn a 2-1 victory.

The teams also took part in a seven-a-side round-robin tournament.

Club secretary Claire Satchwell said: “It was a fantastic day. Our Back To Hockey ladies enjoyed every minute and have improved so much.

“A big thank you to England Hockey for the funding.

“It was also great to welcome the University of Scranton to our club and to watch such a good-spirited match.”
