WEST Ilsley trainer Mick Channon believes there’s plenty more to come from Adorable after the filly claimed a thrilling victory in the Listed Prix Volterra at Longchamp.

A winner at Newbury on her debut in April, the three-year-old finished third at Nottingham before Channon decided to send her across the Channel to the reopened Parisian venue for the mile contest.

And the move paid off as the daughter of Kodiac denied Style Presa by a short head under Christophe Soumillon.

“Great stuff and what a thrilling finish,” said Channon. “She won it right on the nod and showed plenty of guts as the pair of them battled it out.”

“It could easily have gone the other way, but Christophe gave her every chance and she’s the sort of filly who I’d expect to flourish from now on.”

The West Ilsley trainer feels Gospel will improve as she steps up in distance after making a winning debut with a neck success under Charlie Bishop over the minimum trip in a Nottingham maiden stakes.

“This is a smashing filly who is by no means a five-furlong horse,” said Channon.

“She came to us from the breeze ups, so she was clearly well prepared and it was a case of getting her going to see where we were with her.”

Channon enjoyed more success with Patchouli in a six-furlong novice median auction stakes at Lingfield under George Downing, and Charming Guest in a fillies’ novice stakes at Bath in the hands of Charlie Bishop.

The West Ilsley-based jockey was also on board as Buckingham fulfilled the promise of his debut third at Newmarket for Blewbury trainer Eve Johnson Houghton by opening his account in a six-furlong novice auction stakes at Chelmsford City.

Paul Cole’s Whatcombe stables emerged from a quiet spell when Li Kui made it third time lucky under Tom Eaves with a last-gasp success in a three-way photo-finish to a five-furlong novice stakes at Catterick.

Sweet Charity, ridden by Fran Berry, gained a deserved first career success for West Ilsley trainer Denis Coakley when taking a mile and a quarter handicap by a neck at Leicester.

Berry was seen to good effect again when Past Master got off the mark for Wantage trainer Henry Candy with a battling head success in a mile and a half handicap at Goodwood.
