WANTAGE trainer Henry Candy, who suffered a nasty foot injury after being kicked by a horse, received a timely tonic when Ortiz outran her 66-1 odds to finish second to Agrotera in the Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The veteran Kingston Warren handler, whose foot was infected, spent time in hospital and was not present to see the three-year-old filly’s terrific effort under Hollie Doyle as he continues his recovery.

Candy was given further cause for cheer when Hidden Affair followed up his Goodwood success by landing a seven-furlong handicap at Newmarket in the hands of Harry Bentley.

West Ilsley-based jockey Charlie Bishop, who rode his first Group 1 winner when Accidental Agent sprang a 33-1 shock in Royal Ascot’s opening Queen Anne Stakes, was prevented from riding on the final day of the meeting after failing a breath test.

Bishop’s rides had been due to include Ice Age in the Wokingham Stakes for Blewbury trainer Eve Johnson Houghton, handler of Accidental Agent.

Meanwhile, Johnson Houghton’s Royal Ascot success briefly took her to a career-high tenth place in the British Flat Trainers’ Championship, before she dropped a place following Saturday’s racing.

After the weekend, her runners had racked up £621,957 in prize-money – a sum greatly enhanced by Accidental Agent capturing £369,197 in her first Group 1 prize.

It puts her within £42,000 of her previous best.
