A STUNNING opening round from Eddie Pepperell saw him secure a share of the lead in the Portugal Masters.

The Abingdon golfer fired a seven-under-par 64 in Vilamoura to top the leaderboard alongside fellow Englishman Matt Wallace.

Starting at the tenth, Pepperell opened with four pars before hitting top gear.

Birdies at his fifth and sixth holes got him going, before the 27-year-old picked up another shot at his eighth saw him reach the turn on three-under.

Another followed at his tenth, but the key to his round came with three successive birdies on the 12th, 13th and 14th before ending with four pars.
