To mark Oxford United’s 125th season, we are looking back at what made the news this week in three of the club's promotion-winning campaigns.
1964
OXFORD United lost their unbeaten record when they crashed to a 2-0 defeat against Millwall.
The shock reverse smashed the U’s 100 per cent home record in front of the largest Manor Ground crowd of the season, 10,639.
But Oxford held on to third place in Division 4, thanks to a fractionally better goal average than Millwall.
Boss Arthur Turner said: “We lost it in the first half. We played too slow and made it easy for Millwall’s defence.
“They were better in the second half, but what can you do against eight or nine backs?”
1984
OXFORD United improved on their incredible run of success to stay hard on the heels of Division 2 leaders Birmingham with their fifth win in a row.
United owed the 2-1 victory at Grimsby Town, taking their record unbeaten run to 19 league games, to an early own goal and a second from Peter Rhoades-Brown.
They also lost central defenders Gary Briggs and Malcolm Shotton to injury during the game, but both were expected to be fit to play at Blackburn in the Milk Cup three days later.
1995
DRAW specialists Oxford United were boosted by the arrival of two new faces in training – and both of them were strikers.
Boss Denis Smith brought in Martin Aldridge from Northampton Town and Julian Dowe from Ayr United.
Both players came on trial and it was hoped they would provide a lift, with main strikers Paul Moody and Wayne Biggins out through injury against Swansea, when United drew 1-1 – their sixth draw in eight matches.
