FOOTBALL: Didcot forced to share spoils
10:30am Monday 9th April 2012 in Sport
DIDCOT were heading for their sixth away win in Southern League Diviison 1 South & West until Matt Kemble’s 74th minute equaliser secured a 1-1 draw, and the point Wimborne needed for safety on Saturday.
The home threatened in the first minute as Jamie Davidson’s 35-yard effort flew wide.
But the rest of the half belonged to Didcot.
Ollie Thomas, 16, making his second appearance for the Railwaymen, shot just past a post.
Didcot skipper Alex Stanley should have done better when latching onto a free-kick, but his effort was saved by Jason Harvell.
The visitors deservedly took the lead on 37 minutes when Anaclet Odhiambo tapped home at the back post.
Wimborne had the chance to level when they won a free-kick outside the Didcot box.
Micky Hubbard saw his effort swerve around the defensive wall but it sailed straight into keeper Jon Beames’s arms.
After a lacklustre start by both sides to the second half, the home side stepped up a gear, Hubbard's free-kick cannoning back off a post.
The hosts’ improved second half show was rewarded 16 minutes from time when Kemble fired past Beames.
Didcot entertain Abingdon United in a derby today, hoping to gain revenge for the defeat that they suffered on Boxing Day.
That was Abingdon’s last win – 16 games ago.
