Uncertainty continues to surround Chris Wilder ’s future as Oxford United manager despite chairman Ian Lenagan expressing a desire to keep him at the club.

The odds on the 44-year-old taking over at Coventry City continued to fall yesterday, getting as short as 1-3 with one bookmaker.

United had not received an official approach from the npower League One club when contacted last night, and Lenagan, who met Wilder yesterday morning, described the speculation as “bookies’ rumours”.

The U’s chief said he was hopeful nothing changes, but stopped short of warning Coventry off making an advance.

He said: “Chris Wilder is a very good manager and I don’t want to lose him.

“I think it’s a great compliment for Oxford and Chris and the quality of football we are playing.”

He added: “I have not been approached by Coventry City and Chris Wilder has not been approached by anybody.

“So at the current moment there’s no substance in the rumours, but obviously that can change from day-to-day.”

Wilder did not want to add to his earlier comments on the speculation, which he regarded as a “compliment”.

He stressed it had not deflected his attention away from building towards the clash with Swindon Town in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tomorrow night.

“Of course, I’m as focused on Wednesday as I was on Saturday (at York City), you prepare the side and they have to go out and do the club proud,” he said.

The attitude was echoed by striker Tom Craddock, who does not believe the attention will distract the players ahead of the derby.

He said: “We’ve got a good gaffer and if people are going to speculate, let them, but as players we’ve just got to get on with our job.

“At the end of the day we work for the football club and we’ve got to go out and do our best.”

Coventry City reportedly receiv-ed 40 applications to replace Andy Thorn. The Sky Blues, who host Burton Albion tonight, declined to comment on when interviews are expected to take place.

Coventry fans seem to be taking pity on whoever gets the job. Then again if he fails he'll get a chance at another decent L2 club so seems like he has nothing to lose.

Aside from the desperately sad Swindon trolls on here (and frankly they should be embarrassed about their manager who appeared to have a mental breakdown on Sky yesterday) I think the last thing we need is speculation and an unsettled team.

Either Wilder says he wants to stay or he wants to go but he needs to do this within next couple of days. If he goes good luck to him if he stays address the mistakes of last year and let's get on with rest of the season. I don't care if we lose to Swindon tomorrow because promotion is far more important than the tin pot cup and club we're playing.

Hopefully it's a good game tonight and all the fun and games is kept to on the pitch. Very difficult to call this one, home advantage and pressure for us to win but I think we will come out on top....

May the best team win and all that.

Now where did I put those 'bovver boots' ? ;o)

Agreed, it's a no no competiton for me albeit with a chance for one southern club to go to Wembley next year. It is the league which matters for sure although with a local derby bragging rights do matter. I hope it is a good game with neither team getting injuries, both sets of fans to behave too !!!

So Oxford have an unknown manager whereas Paolo di canio is know globally and because of his playing record and success in his short time as a manager the Oxford fans are looking for any little comment from Di Canio to have their say.

Di Canio expects 100% perfection if you dont he changes it - nothing wrong with that. For too long players have got away with whatever they want to do and because someone has come in and has set tough rules you see it as him being demented.
I read on your forum that alot of you would have liked to have him as a manager so your all two faced and are jealous we have him.

You can put a bet on now that there is more likelehood Di Canio will be plying his trade in the premier league than your little manager who has a small and limited focus of where he want to take you.

If you were all honest and its is very difficult for Oxford fans to understand that word you would have Di Canio over non league boy Wilder.

Bixox - you keep dreaming about L1 football as you will never get it under Wilder he is non league he is at his highest level and you are in L2 to stay, how funny it is that on your forum the majority of people on it want Wilder out and looking that you have 1500 people on the forum that is the average of your home crowds apart from when you play us of course as i can guarantee tonight will be your biggest crowd all season at your 3 sided tin pot ground.

De Canio is certainly not renowned as a manager - he is in charge of a suucessful third division club. Fine player, yes - so what ? He made a god start as a manager - but with much larger resources than his opposing managers (of largely 'village clubs') last season. Is he sane?

I be honest say PDC is a bit of a loose canon but he gets results. We have had the wishy washy bland managers in the past , with the same old excuses match after match ... Danny Wilson was a prime example you sometimes thought he'd watched a different game to yourself.

PDC is 100% behind his job, and his passion for it is his half his trouble sometimes, the outburst with Wes F should not have been so detailed, but in saying that, all that went to the match agreed with the substitution and the players response to the substitution fuelled the flames.

So IMO I'm really pleased that we have a manager who speaks his mind and says it as it is - even if it does give those who make the most of it more ammo for their anti PDC or anti Swindon campaigns..... like Millwall say - 'you don't like us and we don't care'
