Chris Wilder was thrilled with a “first class” display from his players as Oxford United again got the better of rivals Swindon Town.

Alfie Potter came off the bench to score the only goal of the derby three minutes from time in Wednesday night's Johnstone’s Paint Trophy first-round tie to send the fans wild.

It was the third time Wilder had guided the U’s to victory over their rivals in just over 12 months.

And the United boss felt the home side had got it spot-on against their npower League One visitors.

He said: “I thought every part of the preparation and the way the players went about it was first class and they deserve the result.

“We made it a scruffy game. We’ve played a lot of these games where we’ve sat off and passed teams to death, but we’ve got to make sure we get the balance right. “I didn’t want the game to pass the players by, it didn’t last year in the two games and it’s not happened again. “They left everything on the pitch.”

The atmosphere was terrific all night, but the roof almost came off with Potter’s strike.

The winger admitted it nearly got the better of him when the ball went in.

He said: “It was an unbelievable feeling, I didn’t know what to do afterwards. I wanted to go and jump in the crowd, but I’m glad I didn’t because I’d have got booked.”

Wilder sprinted down towards the corner flag in celebration, putting his own injury to one side.

He said: “I pulled my calf going for a run with Andy Melville on Tuesday, but that all got forgotten when Alfie strode magnificently into the box.”
