London Welsh wing Phil MacKenzie’s quest for more tries will have to wait after he wasn’t selected to face Stade Francais today.

The Canadian international, who joined from Esher this summer, broke his duck for the Exiles during Sunday’s 28-23 defeat to Saracens.

He was hoping to get the chance to add to his tally today, but now finds he must sit it out. “I was just hoping the run didn’t go on much longer,” said McKenzie reflecting on his first try.

“Now that I have got my first, I hope a few others will come.

“We just put pressure on them in defence and Charlie Hodgson threw a bad pass.

“I managed to get a foot to it and won the race to score.”

Although they are facing French rather than English opponents this week, MacKenzie said training had been no different.

“We have stuck to the same patterns, trying to figure out what we have got to work on in our own game,” he said.

Welsh have enjoyed something of a plucky underdogs role this season, and surprised many with their form.

But MacKenzie said there had been less shock inside their confident camp.

“To be honest, we were a little bit disappointed that we lost the last two games,” he added.

“It is a great group of players. I am loving every minute of it.”

Canada play Samoa, Russia and New Zealand Maori in their autumn internationals, and MacKenzie hopes to be involved.

“The plan is to play a couple of games for Canada because they don’t really come around that often,” he said.

“Two of those weeks are LV Cup matches, so I won’t miss out on the Premiership as much.”
