HE MAY have only raised £750 for Helen & Douglas House, but Jimmy Carr on Deal or No Deal has attracted donations worth thousands.

Mr Carr, a longtime supporter of the East Oxford children and young adults hospice, appeared on the celebrity version of the hit show with the proceeds going to the hospice charity.

The show’s premise is the contestant has one box with a sum of money hidden from view inside — the highest total being £250,000.

Twenty-one other contestants also have boxes they open to reveal different sums, with the main contestant deciding whether to accept the offer from the mysterious ‘Banker’ or stick with the cash hidden in his or her box.

Mr Carr turned down an offer from the banker on the show of £14,000 only to find he had just £750 in his box.

But all was not lost. Hospice spokesman Lin Beekar said: “Although Jimmy was very disappointed that he turned down £14,000 and raised £750 for us, because of his mention of us on the show and the fact he has been tweeting about it (and others have too as a result of this), so far people from across the country have donated £4,345 through our JustGiving page and £1,841 through donations via our website.

“It would be great if we could encourage more people to donate and reach the £14,000.”

The total donated in response to the show so far including Gift Aid is £6,186.68.

Viewers left messages expressing their support for the show on the Deal or no Deal website.

One, Zoe, said: “Painful, but I was with Jimmy all the way, and as I feel so bad I will donate to the charity.”
