Paul Fernandez smashed the course record as he powered to victory in the Rugged Radnage 10K.

The Abingdon runner completed the multi-terrain race in the Chiltern Hills in 36mins 39secs, knocking two and a half minutes off the previous record.

He came home more than a minute ahead of runner-up Eddie O’Gorman (Chiltern).

Fernandez said: “The race is certainly ‘rugged’ which made it feel more than 10k, with the total ascent/descent of 182m being split between two uphills and downhills.

“Conditions underfoot varied, with some of the route on road, but most on tracks with varying levels of mud.

“The second hill was 70m up the side of a muddy field, and it will live in the runners’ memory for a long time.”

Abingdon’s Charlie Stone was 12th overall and second under 18 runner in 42.27, while Julian Moore (V50) was 34th in 46.25.

l Stuart Ansell was the third veteran man home in the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Cross Country Championships at Swinley Forest, Bracknell.

Ansell (White Horse Harriers) finished 22nd overall, while clubmate Paul Jegou was 19th.

Despite the size of the forest, the course was restricted to a flat 1.34-mile loop, with the men’s race taking in five laps for a 6.7-mile total.

Ansell clocked 38mins 36secs, with Jegou recording 38.20.

Abingdon’s Owen Stepney was 17th in 38.03, but only ninth under 20 man such was the strength in his age group.

White Horse’s Josie Harr-ison was eighth in the under 17 girls’ race in 27.10.

Clubmate Ben Claridge (22.18) was seventh in the under 17 boys’ event.

Abingdon’s Fiona Bunn finished fourth in the under 15 girls’ race, clocking 16.45, while clubmate Nick Wiltshire (11.41) came fourth in the under 13 boys’ race.
