ATHLETICS: Radley in tie for second


Radley finished equal-second in their Southern Womens League Premier Div-ision match at Eton.

They were no match for a strong Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow, but they produced nine event victories to finish level with Brighton and move up to sixth place in the Premier Division table.

Sophie Tyers clocked 2mins 17.1 secs to win the senior women’s 800m, while Kay Reynolds was first in the 100m hurdles, clocking 15.4.

Reynolds also claimed B string victories in the high jump with a clearance of 1.50m and the pole vault (1.70m).

Result: 1 WSEH 186pts, 2= Radley, Brighton 136, 4 Newquay 103.

Radley B dug deep into their resources, but still finished bottom in their Division 1 match at Ealing.

They now lie 14th in the table.

Despite the result, Radley posted a handful of event victories, most notably, Emma Birch, who clocked 2.55.5 to win the under 15 girls’ A string 800m.

There was also a B string success in the 800m for Jenny Wilson, who clocked 3.15.5.

In the senior section, Sam Ahmet won the B string 100m hurdles in 24.1, while Becky Sunderland was victorious in the B string pole vault (1.20m).

l Radley had to settle for second place in their Southern 1 West match in the National Young Athletes League at Tilsley Park.

Although they finished 38 points adrift of City, there were plenty of excellent performances.

The club’s athlete-of-the-match, under 15 Kim Suther-land, clocked 27.1 secs in the 200m, while Adam Breslin took the boys’ award for victories in hammer, shot and 1500m.

Under 17 girl Louise Brown ran a season’s best of 12.5 in the 80m hurdles, while under 13 Megan Humphreys ran a pb of 2.29.4 in the 800m.

In Southern 2 West, Abingdon Amblers finished sixth at Walton.

However, there were a number of national graded performances, with Peter Barn-shaw leading the way with a grade one time of 57.3 secs in the under 17 boys’ 400m hurdles.

This was followed by Josh Smedley, who clocked a personal best of 24.4 in the 200m.

In the under 13 girls’ competition, Bryony Dawson re-corded grade two times in the 75m and 150m of 10.5 and 20.8 secs respectively.

Anna Stepney ran 23.1 in the 150m, and also anchored the under 13 girls to victory in the 4x100m relay.

In the under 13 boys, Ciar-an Birch won the 800m in 2.46.8, while Thomas Barrett, clocked 30.0 to come second in the 100m.

In the under 15 boys’ event, Tom Fabes threw 12.85m in the discus.
