CRICKET: Cook leads Vale to first victory


Abingdon Vale seamer James Cook took 6-87 to blast his side to their first Oxford Times Cherwell League victory of the season at the expense of fellow Division 2 strugglers Hanborough.

Cook's career-best performance was backed up by left arm spinner Paul White, who who took 4-102 as the visitors were bowled out for 221.

Earlier Vale had posted 250-7 thanks to the in-form Ed Tilley (63) and Graham Coates (56).

Aussie import Ben Jones proved his worth to Challow & Childrey by taking 5-20 and stroking a classy 47 as Tiddington were thrashed by eight wickets.

Only Will Cooper (34) survived for long, with leg-spinner Jimmy Phillips (3-23) also bowling well.

Phillips then chipped in with an unbeaten 45 as Challow chased down the target in 22.1 overs, with only two wickets down.

Rob Keates (44), Marco Cecchini (39) and Ben Jefferis (32) got starts for Kingston Bagpuize at Dinton 2nd in Division 3.

But their failure to make big scores cost them the game.

Tom Scrase snr’s 36 not out saw Bagpuize to 214-8, while Shaun Smith claimed 7-36.

Dave Pearce took 3-56, but Faisal Ali's 69 not out closed out a three-wicket win.

Challow & Childrey 2nd recovered from 87-6 after 25 overs to reach 251-9 thanks to a terrific ton by Nigel Hill (113no), who added 131 for the seventh wicket with Neil Phillips (31).

Joe White took 5-68 in an impressive 22-over spell for Banbury 3rd, who came close to forcing a win thanks to Julian Briggs' 72, but were then left hanging on at 235-9.

The reliable Trevor Spindler took 6-60 for Wallingford, but they had to settle for a draw at Great & Little Tew 2nd.

Tew's 214-8 owed much to Steve Wilson's unbeaten 49.

It proved more than enough despite Mark Bowman's 42 and Will Emmett's 53 not out, as the visitors closed on 152-5.

Dave Ward (58) and Mukesh Shori (57no) helped Abingdon Vale 2nd reach 195 all out at Bledlow Ridge 2nd, Richard Dryden taking 5-72 and Mark Dakin 4-73.

Phil Brooks (45) laid the platform for the home side's reply, then Dryden (53no) finished it off with three wickets in hand.
