Jake Wright holds off Adam Birchall
Jake Wright was thrilled to beat Gillingham on Tuesday, but the Oxford United captain admitted it would mean nothing if they failed to follow it up with another good result.
The U’s showed they can cope with the league leaders in the 1-0 win at Priestfield.
They have another stern test tomorrow with the visit of Port Vale, who have been in the top two since September.
Wright believes the midweek win has given United momentum, but knows they must back it up with another good performance.
He said: “It was a really difficult game where we’ve done really well, but we can’t waste it now. “We have to get something out of the game tomorrow.”
The centre back thinks consistency is the main difference between themselves and the top teams.
And while they remain in mid-table, Wright has seen good habits emerge in the last fortnight.
He said: “That’s three games unbeaten now, with three clean sheets.
“I’m not going to get carried away, we just need to go into Saturday’s game and try to get three points.”
