PROLIFIC non-league striker John Campbell is edging closer to a move to Oxford United.

Several Football League clubs, including Sheffield Wednesday, Carlisle United and Fleetwood Town, have shown an interest in the 26-year-old, but it appears the U’s are at the front of the queue for the Jarrow Roofing frontman.

Campbell impressed while on trial earlier this month, setting up both goals in a 2-1 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Reports in the north east suggest a deal has been agreed between the clubs and the striker, who has 24 goals in 19 games for the Northern League Division 1 outfit this season.

Latest United news:

Suggestions he has already signed are premature and U’s boss Michael Appleton was reluctant to go into detail until the loose ends were tied up.

However, the head coach did say: “We’re certainly in deep negotiations with Jarrow, the agent and the kid.

“There’s a strong possibility, but there are others involved.”

The matter will be resolved one way or the other quickly, as the loan window closes on Thursday.
