DIDCOT Town joint manager Ian Concannon feels his side’s FA Cup clash at local rivals Wantage Town is a mouth-watering one.

The Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West rivals, who are separated by just ten miles, will face each other on August 29 following last week’s preliminary round draw.

Concannon said: “We would have preferred to be playing at home, but we’re happy with the draw.

“It’s a local derby early in the season, so it’s something to look forward to and hopefully there will be a good turnout for it.

“We want to look to progress obviously, but they’ll be saying exactly the same thing, so we know it will be a tough game.”

One man who has crossed the divide this summer is midfielder Mark Janes.

After leaving Wantage at the end of last season, Janes briefly trained with Banbury United before making the switch to the Railwaymen.

Concannon added: “We were a little surprised when he turned up with one of the other lads, but he’s got good quality and he showed it and we’re very pleased he’s agreed to sign on.”

But goalkeeper James Foster has left the club after signing for league rivals North Leigh.

Meanwhile, Mike Ford has taken charge of his first training sessions as Banbury United manager as he continues to assemble his squad.

He said: “We’ve had a couple of sessions now and that’s meant that I’ve been able to see what the lads are capable of doing.

“We’ve had a lot of players in to have a look at – some are lads that I was aware of and asked to come down to training and others are lads that I was unaware of and so I’ve had the opportunity to have a look at them and see what they can do.

“We probably need two or three more before the start of the season.

“We need a new goalkeeper and a centre half and we also need a creative player, so there are the three areas of the pitch where I think we’re looking to improve.”
