OXFORD United have been drawn away to Birmingham City in the first round of the EFL Cup.

It will be the first competitive meeting of the teams since December 1998, when the Blues won 7-1 at the Manor Ground.

The tie will be a special one for U's chairman Darryl Eales, who is a Birmingham City supporter.

Michael Appleton’s men were unseeded in the rebranded competition, which was formerly the Capital One Cup.

United have knocked out higher league opposition in the first round during the past two seasons, winning 2-1 at Bristol City in 2014 before last year’s 4-0 thumping of Brentford at Griffin Park.

The tie is due to take place in the week commencing August 8, after United’s opening league fixture against Chesterfield.
