RYAN Ledson’s signing will give Oxford United the option to change formation, according to Michael Appleton.

The head coach has predominantly used a 4-4-2 system for the past 18 months, but believes promotion to Sky Bet League One means they need added tactical flexibility.

While United are relatively well stocked for central midfielders, they were lacking a specialist holding player.

Ledson fits the bill and Appleton is now looking at using three players in the middle of the park.

He said: “We have Lunny (John Lundstram) who does that (holding) job for us manfully, but there are times where I can allow Lunny to play a bit further forward and Ryan gives me that option.

“We have got a bit more flexibility by bringing Ryan in and having Joe (Rothwell) as well.

“It gives us the opportunity to play with a three-man midfield if we need to.

“He gives us options to play different formations.

“I think we’re going to need that this year, because we’ll face tougher opposition than we did last season.”

The signing leaves Appleton with only one more hole to fill before the transfer window shuts on August 31 – a pacy winger.

He said: “If we get that player in then I’ll be absolutely delighted.

“If we don’t I do expect Plan B, C or D to come off and make sure we fill that role.

“I can assure you we’re trying very hard at the minute and hopefully by the end of play on Wednesday we’ll have it filled.”
