BERINSFIELD lifted the North Berks Charity Shield after an epic 5-3 victory over Saxton Rovers in the final at Milton United, writes Richard Underwood.

This completed a notable league and cup double for the club, who were crowned North Berks League Division 1 champions last month

Saxton’s Daniel Parry saw his early effort cleared off the line by defender Shane Harris.

Berinsfield went in front when a long ball found Max Palmer on the edge of the box and his strike went over Saxton keeper Jack Absolom into the net.

Saxton levelled on the half hour as Frank Haines fired home.

Five minutes before the break, Saxton went in front when Parry found space from a corner and struck a shot into the top corner.

But on the stroke of half-time, the scores were level, Charlie Lee curling a fine effort past Absolom from 20 yards.

In the second half, Brian Rawlings put Berinsfield in front when he reacted quickest to a loose ball to slot in from close range.

Berinsfield extended their lead with 15 minutes left when a pinpoint cross into the box from Mark Ingram found the unmarked Palmer who headed home from close range.

Daniel Cox reduced the arrears to 4-3 from ten yards, and Saxton had a glorious chance to pull level when a Cox’s effort struck a post.

In the dying minutes, Berinsfield wrapped up victory with their fifth of the game.

Murphy was brought down in the box by Absolom, and Ingram stepped up to fire home from the spot to secure the trophy.

Division 1 side Kintbury Rangers Res lifted the Nairne Paul Cup with a 2-1 win over Division 4 outfit Lambourn Sports Res.
