LES Robinson is thrilled to have been offered a testimonial by Oxford United – 17 years after playing his final game for the club.

Only five players have made more appearances for the U’s than the popular full back, who featured 458 times after joining in 1990.

But he left a decade later without being honoured, something which had been largely forgotten until the 1995/96 promotion squad got together for a reunion last season.

Supporter Andrew Brockbank approached the club with the idea and then managing director Greig Box Turnbull backed it.

Robinson, who now has a variety of roles at Swalcliffe Park, a school catering for boys with autism near Banbury, said: “If I’m being honest it’s come as a shock.

“It came up at the reunion that I hadn’t had a testimonial.

“But after 17 years it’s the last thing I expected, so when the club came to me I was delighted.”

The testimonial year will culminate in a game this spring, but launches with a golf day at Magnolia Park on October 26.
