OXFORD United are in the Checkatrade Trophy second round draw tonight – but there is a 50 per cent chance they will not discover their opponents until the end of November.
Pep Clotet’s men progressed as runners-up in Southern Group G despite losing their final match 4-3 to Milton Keynes Dons on Thursday.
That means they will go into a pot to face one of the winners from groups A-D when the draw is made at Wembley this evening.
However, while Portsmouth and Gillingham fall into that category, the final games in Group C and D are not played until November 28 – only one week before the second round.
The complications may not end there, though.
As a runner-up, United are due to play their next game away from home.
But the exception would be if West Ham United Under 21s top their group, which they will do by avoiding defeat against Wycombe Wanderers.
As an invited club, the Hammers have been given permission not to play at the London Stadium, so should they be drawn with the U’s, the tie would take place at the Kassam Stadium.
UNITED’S POTENTIAL OPPONENTS
Portsmouth
Gillingham
West Ham Utd U21s or Swindon Town
Yeovil Town or Plymouth Argyle
