SUCCESSIVE home wins were very welcome for Pep Clotet – but the Oxford United manager saw plenty of room for improvement in the performance against Blackpool.

Jon Obika’s header from Alex Mowatt’s free-kick ten minutes from time claimed a 1-0 victory in a poor game where goalkeeper Simon Eastwood had to be in outstanding form to keep out the visitors.

Coming after a 3-1 success against MK Dons on New Year’s Day, it was the first time United had won two home games in a row under Clotet.

But while the Spaniard was pleased with the result, the display fell short of his demands.

He said: “I don’t want to fall into the trap of being happy because we won the game.

“We have a mentality of being critical of ourselves and analysing things we can do better.

“I think we missed some chances which would have taken us into a better position in the game.

“We are very satisfied with back-to-back wins, that’s fantastic, but we want to get better.”

It could have been a different game if Gino van Kessel had chosen a simple pass to give Wes Thomas an open goal in the ninth minute.

But instead the Slavia Prague loanee attempted to take on goalkeeper Christoffer Mafoumbi himself and had a shot blocked.

Clotet said: “Gino could have beaten the goalkeeper and scored, but I think the right option was to play in Wes to score.

“That set the kind of afternoon we had – working very hard in defence, forcing a mistake to win the ball back and then our strikers didn’t have the best day.

“But they all worked very hard and in the end we had the set play.”

United skipper John Mousinho limped off in the second half, but the initial diagnosis was a tight hamstring which should keep the defender out for only a matter of days.
