WALSALL manager Jon Whitney hailed the “world-class” saves from Liam Roberts which kept Oxford United out at the Bescot Stadium.

The goalkeeper was brought in for his first start in more than a month and delivered a man-of-the-match display in the 2-1 home win.

His superb performance was capped off by a stunning finger-tip stop to turn over a shot from James Henry which would have levelled the scores 14 minutes from time.

Whitney told the Express & Star: “It seems like an exaggeration when you say world-class but I think they were, especially the tip-over in the second half, which was outstanding.”

United boss Pep Clotet said: “He was man of the match, which means my side did a lot of things.

“Obviously he had a fantastic game.

“The only thing you can do as a coach is to try to create chances and avoid them making chances as much as possible.

“I think we did both things, then it’s up to the players to put the last part of it.”

While United were pushing for an equaliser late on, a rueful Clotet felt the performance was worthy of maximum points.

He said: “I think we did enough not only to get a draw, but to get a win.

“I’m very pleased when it comes to the performance, except when you create that many chances you need to make sure you’re ruthless at both ends.

“They got close to our box a couple of times and we gave them two goals.”
