FOOTBALL: Claydon leads Wantage's Vase goal spree
8:14pm Wednesday 23rd October 2013 in Local Football
Richie Claydon scored a hat-trick as Wantage Town recorded a resounding 7-0 victory at home to fellow Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division side Abingdon Town in the FA Vase first round on Saturday.
But Wantage received little reward for their success by being drawn away to South West Peninsula League side Plymouth Parkway in the second round on November 16.
Claydon beat the offside trap to open the scoring after 12 minutes.
Drew Fowler went close for Abingdon, who are struggling near the bottom of the table, before further goals from Matt Pedder and Claydon made it 3-0 at half-time.
Abingdon keeper Gareth Walker also saved well from Pedder, who along with Tom Malton, missed the second period through injury.
Substitute Sean Webb made it 4-0 just after the break.
Abingdon were awarded a penalty for handball, but keeper Steve Howe saved well from Fowler’s spot-kick. Richie Guy made it a nap hand for the hosts, Tom Melledew added a sixth and Claydon grabbed his hat-trick with three minutes left.
Abingdon United, bottom of the Hellenic Premier, put up a brave performance at home to Fareham Town, taking it to extra time after a goalless 90 minutes.
But the Wessex League side proved too strong, winning 3-0 with goals from Graham Lindsey (2) and Pete Murphy.
Milton United lost 2-0 away to Reading Town, both of whose goals came from Ross Herridge inside a minute at the end of the first half.
Guy scored a second-half hat-trick as Wantage Town stormed into the third round of the Uhlsport Hellenic League’s Floodlit Cup with a 10-1 trouncing of hosts Malmesbury Victoria, of Division 1 West last Tuesday.
Andrew Younie got the ball rolling with the opening two goals and further efforts from Tom Malton, Pedder and Sean Webb made it 5-0 at half-time.
The final half was dominated by Guy’s treble, which was supplemented by a second strike from Malton and an own goal.
On Saturday, Shrivenham went down 3-2 at Holyport in the Premier Division.
Goals from Josh Fowler and David Coleman weren’t enough for the visitors as Jamie West (2) and Dan Sharp scored for the hosts.
Didcot Town Res slipped to the bottom of Division 1 East after crashing to a 4-1 defeat at Finchampstead. Richard Kell scored in the first minute, and Jamekal Henderson made it 2-0 before half-time.
Ross McDonald reduced the deficit, but Ben Woozley and Sean Cahill struck to clinch it for Finchampstead.
Bottom club Letcombe put up a spirited show, but were unable to stop Tytherington Rocks marching on at the top of Division 1 West as they went down 2-0 at home.
