Gavin Jones has quit as manager of struggling Abingdon Town, who are bottom of the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division The former Wantage pla-yer was appointed assistant to boss Shaun Smith in the close season.

But when Smith resigned for personal reasons in July, Jones (pictured) took over the reins.

Town failed to recorded a single league victory in 18 games under Jones.

Club spokesperson Dawn Walker said: “Gavin made the decision with great reluctance.

“But his workload as manager and daily job is taking its toll on him, and he feels, has no alternative than to leave the post with immediate effect.

“The show must go on and as a long-standing club in the Hellenic League, we are committed to seeing the season through, despite losing two managers already".

Club chairman Tom Larman said: "My thanks Gav for all his efforts in taking on the role of our manager (at such short notice) and for bringing in a squad week after week, along with some highly-egarded players too.

“We will miss him terribly, but understand the importance of work and appreciate the time and effort Gav has given to us.”

Danny Morgan and Gareth Walker will be working together and take over as caretaker managers.

On Saturday, Abingdon crashed 7-1 at home to Shrivenham, Steve Robert-son scoring a hat-trick for the visitors.

Shrivenham led 1-0 at half-time, thanks to David Coleman’s third-minute eff-ort.

Joe Parker equalised for Abingdon two minutes into the second half.

But then they collapsed, with Robertson’s treble being added to by Josh Fowler (2) and Matt Bown.
