SOUTHERN LEAGUE

WANTAGE Town came back to earth with a bump after losing 4-2 at home to Swindon Supermarine on Monday.

Gary Ackling’s side had bagged their first victory in the Southern League after a 4-2 success over Bishops Cleeve on Saturday.

But hopes of building on their first Division 1 South & West victory were ended with a poor defensive performance.

The hosts were behind after just two minutes when Supermarine skipper Ross Adams headed a corner past Gareth Tucker.

Luke Hopper increased their lead on the half-hour, and Wantage were 3-0 down when Adams nodded home his second after the break.

Wantage scored twice in the space of three minutes, with Jimmy Deabill heading in a corner, before substitute Richie Guy blasted home.

But Kyle Lapham’s 30-yard drive sealed it for Super-marine.

Two goals in as many minutes was key to victory over Bishops Cleeve, who took the lead through Joe Tustain on three minutes.

Stuart Cattell levelled on 27 minutes before a quickfire double at the start of the second period gave Wantage some breathing space.

Karl Roberts headed home after 47 minutes and Matt Jones made it 3-1 almost immediately after, latching onto Deabill’s flick.

A well-timed run from captain Tom Melledew saw him hit No 4 with 12 minutes remaining, before Bishops Cleeve’s Harlie Price converted an 89th-minute penalty.

Despite a battling display, Wantage lost 4-2 at North Leigh last Wednesday.

The visitors, who pulled goals back after falling 2-0 and 3-1 behind, finished with nine men.

Cattell was sent off, before Sam Parrish was stretchered off late on, after Wantage had made their three substitutes.

Kieran Sanders and Andy Gunn put the Millers ahead, with Deabill replying.

Cattell was sent off after fouling Morgan Williams in the box.

Sanders converted the spot kick and although Jones made it 3-2, Williams struck nine minutes from time.
