After dramatic wins in the previous two rounds, Didcot Town joint-manager Ian Concannon admitted he had little appetite for further excitement when his side travel to Northwood in the second qualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday, writes Matthew Bruce.

The Railwaymen staged a remarkable comeback from 3-0 down to beat local rivals Wantage Town 4-3 in the preliminary round, before edging past Ryman League Premier Division side VCD Athletic by the same scoreline in a replay, courtesy of a stoppage-time winner.

But further drama is not on Concannon’s agenda this weekend.

“I’ll happily take a scrappy 1-0 win, whether it’s in the league or in the cup,” he said.

“As long as Didcot win I’m happy.”

Should such heroics be required again this weekend, however, Concannon is confident that the side he and his fellow manager Jamie Heapy have assembled have the necessary strength of character.

He added: “We’ve not been as fluent as we would have liked in the last few games, but I think one thing we do have at this club is the attitude that we never give up and never know when we’re beaten.”

Meanwhile, an excellent display by keeper Leigh Bedwell helped depleted Didcot draw 1-1 at home to Evesham United in Division 1 South & West of the Evo-Stik Southern League on Saturday Andy Ballard and Mark Janes joined a list of absentees for the Railwaymen, whose squad included youth player Charlie Noble.

After two good saves from Bedwell, Didcot had thought they’d taken the lead on the stroke of half-time, but Mark Francis’s header was ruled out for offside.

The hosts actually went ahead against the run of play ten minutes from time when Josh Dutton-Black’s shot was spilled by Kevin Sayer, and Francis bundled the ball home.

Within five minutes Evesham were level. Clayton Green’s cross was met by an unmarked Dan MacDonald who volleyed home.

Only Bedwell’s super save denied MacDonald a late winner.
