Didcot Town have hit the jackpot after finding out that their historic Emirates FA Cup first round tie will be shown live on television.

The Railwaymen’s home clash with Sky Bet League Two side Exeter City will be broadcast on BT Sport at 12pm on Sunday, November 8.

Didcot, who reached the first round for the first time in their 108-year history with victory over Brentwood Town on Saturday, will pocket £67,500 from the television coverage.

This is on top of the £29,425 they have netted from winning five rounds of the competition, while a further £18,000 is on offer for the winners of the tie.

Chairman John Bailey likened the news to winning the lottery.

He said: “It’s wonderful, brilliant.

I’m very pleased, it is unbelievable.

“Here we are in the first round and now on TV which is a dream come true for the club.

“What we would do with the money is make sure it can generate more in the long run – facilities so we can bring other players through.”

Didcot, who play in Division 1 South & West of the Evo-Stik Southern League, are the lowest-ranked team left in the competition.

They aim to attract a full house against the Grecians to the Draycott Engineering Loop Meadow Stadium.

Bailey said: “It is an opportunity for the people of Didcot to get behind their team.

“The best cup competition in the world and we are in the first round proper – it is unbelievable for the standard we are at.”

Joint managers Ian Concannon and Jamie Heapy were a part of Didcot’s FA Vase-winning side of 2005.

Concannon feels having the game televised is a reward for everyone.

He said: “It’s fantastic. There were a lot of joyous faces in our clubhouse on Monday when the draw was made.

“The reward for getting Exeter is just as much as a reward for the players as it is for the committee.

“It is brilliant for everybody.”

Didcot have shown grit to get this far, coming from behind to beat Wantage Town, VCD Athletic, Northwood and then Brentwood.

And Concannon says there is no reason why his side cannot cause Exeter problems.

He said: “A lot of people will think ‘fair play you have done well and this is where it all ends’, but we will not be there to enjoy the day.

“If we play to the best of our ability you never know.”
