Striker Jimmy Deabill is set to swap Didcot Town for local rivals Wantage Town, writes Matthew Bruce.

The forward, who won the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division title with Wantage in 2014, signed for the Railwaymen in January.

But injury problems and work commitements have limited Deabill’s opportunities at Didcot.

“We’ve had a very open and honest discussion about the situation and unfortunately we’re just not able to guarantee Jimmy regular football,” said Didcot joint manager Ian Concannon.

“Wantage made a seven-day approach.

“I can totally understand Jimmy’s situation, because he wants to play and feels he can still offer a lot to a side at this level.”

Deabill’s transfer is due to be completed in time for the striker to make his first appearance in Wantage’s Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West fixture at home to Bridgwater Town on Saturday.

And interim manager Stuart Cattell believes the signing could make a big difference to the Alfredians’ survival prospects.

“I’ve known Jimmy for a few years now and we’ve played together on quite a few occasions,” said Cattell.

“We were obviously both in the side which won the league here a couple of seasons ago, so we’ve enjoyed a bit of success together.

“Jimmy is a good leader and the young lads in the team can really learn a lot from him because he’s been there and done it all before.

“For the club it’s quite a coup, because we’ve been struggling in the last 18 months.

“Hopefully this is just the sort of signing which will give the whole club a boost.”

Cattell and assistant Sam Collier will continue to take charge until at least Christmas, by which time the club hope to have a more experienced coach helping them.
