Wantage Town’s recent improved form evaporated as they crashed 5-0 to Evesham United on a heavy Alfredian Park pitch on Saturday.
Despite the result, Stuart Cattell’s side still have a five-point cushion between them and Burnham, who occupy the second relegation position in Division 1 South & West of the Evo-Stik Southern League.
Evesham dominated the first half, with Wantage keeper Eddie Cavanagh a busy man.
However he was beaten only once before the break by Matt Sysum in the 40th minute.
The dispirited hosts fell away badly in the second half, and conceded further goals to Sysum, Adam Mann (2) and Nathan Modest.
It does not get any easier for Wantage, who travel to play-off contenders North Leigh in an Oxfordshire derby on Saturday.
