ABINGDON Town will not be playing their football in the North Berks League next season, with doubts arising about the club’s future, writes Matthew Bruce.

The Abbots, returned to the league after resigning from the Hellenic League in 2014 due to financial reasons.

But last season’s fifth-placed finish could be their last appearance in the league after the club failed to register for next season before the May 1 deadline.

“We tend to be very generous with our existing clubs regarding the deadline, but we’ve made several attempts to reach them with no response,” said spokesman Phil Annets.

“Our AGM is on Tuesday June 28 and Abingdon Town are not in the proposed league structure.”

The Hellenic League have confirmed that they have received no application from the club, potentially leaving Town without a league for next season.

Chairman Tom Larman refused to comment on the club’s plans.

Abingdon Town are one of the oldest clubs in the Berks & Bucks FA, having been founded as Abingdon in 1870, and they have a long and distinguished history.

There was a golden period in the late 1950s when they won the Hellenic Premier Division title three times in four years, as well lifting the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup.

In the 1992-93 season, the Culham Road-based club reached the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup and sixth place in Ryman Isthmian League Division 1.

Crowmarsh Gifford have also left the North Berks League, along with Faringdon Town, who have applied to join the Hellenic League.
