Abingdon United recorded their first home win of 2012 with a shock 2-1 victory against the Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West play-off chasers Sholing.

The home side, whose last home win was against Didcot Town on Boxing Day, had Sholing on the back foot early on and took the lead when Aaron Parfitt’s free-kick was powerfully headed home by Luke Carnell at the far post.

Five minutes later, Abingdon had a let-off when Kevin Gibbens’s chip hit the woodwork.

At the other end, Ricky Allaway went close with a header as Abingdon kept up the pressure.

After the break, Abingdon kept up their grip and doubled their lead.

Sam Packer was fouled outside the area, with Sam Collier firing the resulting free kick through the wall and past Mike Hookway in the Sholing goal.

Abingdon almost added to their lead, but Hookway turned Matt Biddle’s volley onto the bar and away.

Five minutes from time, Lee Wort cut the deficit after a swift turn and shot under the body of James Foster.

But Abingdon played out the final few minutes comfortably to record back-to-back victories.
