NATIONAL 2 SOUTH

TWO tries in the final ten minutes saw Chinnor edge out Taunton Titans 30-26 at Kingsey Road and climb to fourth place.

Replacement Sam Angell and then wing Reuben Haile went over on 72 and 77 minutes, with fly half Ed Keohane converting both, as third-placed Taunton saw their 26-16 lead shattered.

Full back Gary Kingdom fed scrum half Lewis Webb for Titans’ opening try on six minutes, which the former converted.

Taunton’s pressure paid off with flanker Jamie Fleming scoring from a driving maul, albeit after plenty of discussion between the officials.

Chinnor defended well and two Keohane penalties either side of Fleming’s try kept them in touch.

Taunton led 19-6 soon after half-time, with centre Freddie Fraser profiting from a poor downfield kick to score try No 3, converted by Kingdom.

Chinnor flanker Andrew Tibbatts scored from a driving maul on 48 minutes, Keohane converting.

The sin-binning of Taunton wing Jack Faulkner allowed Keohane to close the gap to 19-16 with a penalty.

Taunton shrugged off the Chinnor pressure to score through wing Nick Mason, stepping in from wide out on 66 minutes, and Kingdom converted.

Then came the hosts’ purple patch as flanker Ryan Long scythed through the midfield, wrong-footing defenders at will, to slip Angell in for a try under the posts.

With Chinnor belief surging, Angell put in the deftest of crossfield kicks to allow Haile to collect and scorch the turf to the corner for the winning try.

Keohane’s conversion gave Chinnor a four-point margin, but they had to defend well at the end.

Leaders Henley Hawks made it 12 wins from 12 with a hard-fought 17-3 victory over Redruth at Dry Leas.

Fly half James Comben kicked Hawks ahead with a penalty.

Henley continued to attack, with flanker Tom Hall to the fore and the pressure told when Redruth’s Tom Simmonds was sin-binned.

Hawks’ driving maul was illegally brought down close to the line, leaving the referee, Paul Kimber, with no option but to award a penalty try, which Comben converted.

Redruth threatened briefly through No 8 Kyle Marriott and scrum half Greg Goodfellow and fly half Jonathan Hopkins kicked a penalty.

After the break, another Hawks driving maul was held up just short of the line, but prop Dave Manning claimed the ball to drive over and Comben converted.

This turned out to be the last score of the game as despite further yellow cards for Redruth’s Neilson Webber and Goodfellow, Hawks could not find a way through a resilient defence.
