Skipper Jacob Taylor said he was “happily hollow” after a record-breaking display from his Oxford University side at Twickenham.

The Dark Blues smashed Cambridge 43-6 yesterday to notch up the biggest victory in 133 Varsity Matches, beating their 35-3 success way back in 1909.

They also completed five wins in a row over the old enemy for the first time.

In addition, loose head prop Lewis Anderson became the first player from either side to feature in five winning teams since the series started in 1872.

Full back Taylor, an Australian sevens international, was surprisingly downbeat on such a great day.

“I’m happily hollow,” he said afterwards. “The great enjoyment has come in the preparation for this day, now that it’s come I feel a little flat. But I’m going to enjoy the moment.”

It was also a memorable day for Oxford scrum half Sam Egerton, who was man of the match for the second time in three years, after becoming the first player since 1925 to score in three successive Varsity Matches.

Law student Egerton made history in 2013 when he became the first player in this series to be sent off.

“That was a big disappointment for me and I didn’t want my university career to end like that,” he said.

“So I came back this year to try and redeem myself although it went beyond my wildest expectations. It’s now a fitting end.”

Of the man-of-the-match award, he said he was not keen on such a thing in rugby where players had different roles.

“But being behind such a dominant scrum made things easy for me,” added Egerton, who said he would like to play rugby professionally, although his task over Christmas is to find a law firm to employ him.

Anderson played down his record five winning appearances.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet – the real thrill is playing and spending time together with this team,” said the prop, who confirmed he will be back next year for a possible sixth victory.

Beaten Cambridge captain Harry Peck paid tribute to the Dark Blues.

He said: “My players couldn’t have given more. We were just beaten by a better side, who have been together for several years.”
