GROVE are looking to use their first Oxfordshire Cup triumph as a stepping stone towards further success.

The south Oxfordshire club beat Oxford Harlequins 24-22 at Iffley Road on Wednesday, to complete a fairytale victory in their first county cup final in 43 years.

Roger Sevier landed a dramatic 78th-minute conversion from the touchline to edge 2014 champions Quins, after they trailed by ten points with a quarter of an hour to play.

No 8 Joe Bellinger’s unconverted try set up a tense finale, but Grove kept their nerve and Harry Carr went over in the corner with two minutes remaining.

Sevier still had it all to do with the boot, but the fly half brushed aside all the pressure to add what turned out to be the match-winning conversion.

Grove still have two games remaining in their second season in South West 1 East.

They are safe from relegation in tenth position, and head coach Craig Burrows is targeting further progression next year.

He said: “The dreaded second season is now out of the way and this win is something that will stay with the club for a long time.

“The buzz around the players will hopefully keep everyone together for next year.

“Maybe a couple of additions will steer us towards challenging next season for the top four – that’s the target.”

Grove captain James Eckert echoed Burrows’ thoughts, adding: “We are quite ambitious.

“We need everyone to buy into it and then we can really do some damage.”

He continued: “We need to get through the next two games and we’ll have a good chat with everyone over the summer.”

Grove are next in action when they make the trip to ninth-placed Reading on April 11.

Burrows’ side finish their South West 1 East campaign with a home match against Swindon the following week.
