Elizabeth Dorey represented England for the first time at the European Junior Touch Championships at Nottingham – just missing out on glory.

The 16-year-old, from Summertown, only started playing the sport in June as a way to keep fit over the summer.

Dorey, who also plays rugby union for Gosford All Blacks Under 18 girls, was initially selected to play for the southern regional team (the Southern Mavericks).

But after impressing, the call then came to represent her country in England’s Under 18 side.

The six-team tournament saw other sides representing Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Europe and UAE, with Dorey helping England through to the final.

However, after a gruelling eight-match event, England were edged out by Wales and forced to take the runners-up berth.

Dorey is hoping to start a touch rugby side at St Edward’s School, having just joined the sixth form.

Grove RFC are hosting a colts invitation seven-a-side tournament on Sunday, starting at noon.

A dozen teams, including Abingdon, Bicester and Chinnor, are involved, with the top four after the group games playing for the President’s Cup.
